Right. Sudden comas, not all that new. Rather standard for Johto, although admittedly still strange for most standards of normality.
The vacant stares? Those are a bit new. But what's important, what's very, very important right now is that everyone stays as calm as possible. I'm sure there's people that've passed out in between towns and who-even-knows where else, so if you come across a case like that the best thing to do would likely be to get them to the nearest Center as quickly as possible.
I'm not sure they're going to actually help, but it is much better than being unconscious in the middle of nowhere.
[As the Doctor spoke, a particularly curious Shedinja seemed to be s l o w l y floating up behind him.]
First priority is to make sure everyone's safe, if not conscious. Then we can worry about what steps to take to solve this. Panicking over them isn't going to help.
[The Shedinja was barely a foot behind him--then a Kirlia and Abra proceeded to grab it and teleport offscreen. Of course, the Doctor was focused on what he was saying and absolutely none the wiser.]
...So. Stay calm, try to get everyone that's fallen unconscious somewhere safe, and stay calm. That's the important bit, the bit about not panicking all over the place. Ever seen a lot of people panic? Never solves anything.
[But looking behind you now and again might, Doctor.]
And if anyone sees someone named Rory running about, do let me know.

Apparently they suck your soul out.
...They do what now.
Don't do it.
So what do they look like from the front?
Like this, according to the Pokédex.

...Yes. Yes they are. Usually. Sometimes.
Aren't they supposed to take your soul? To heaven? If you were a good person...? [ Religion. He doesn't know it. ]
Other times they're robots that want to kill you, or made of stone and want to kill you.
Or, in this case, bugs that want to eat your soul.
I have never heard of angels that were robots or made of stone.

[Dances around and flails and moonwalks.... all in the midst of panicking.]

We found her on the ground... her eyes glazed over and her soul---
