Maybe he's disoriented by the light? [She's not too sure about that- hers doesn't seem to have that problem, after all- but hey, she's just throwing out whatever somewhat plausible-sounding suggestion she can think of here.]

I'm really not quite sure how to proceed with this. And being not sure isn't a new thing for me. I usually make things up as I go, but this is a little tricky.

I checked to make sure his wings were working properly--same length, nothing broken. Tried to see if he could do a straight line, seems like he can until he whaps into something.
